Rising global temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, and increased frequency of extreme weather events are fundamentally altering ecosystems worldwide.
Scientists have observed that many species are shifting their geographic ranges toward cooler regions, typically moving toward higher latitudes or elevations. However, this migration is not always possible, particularly for species with limited mobility or those inhabiting isolated ecosystems such as islands or mountaintops. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) estimates that approximately one million species are currently at risk of extinction, with climate change identified as a significant contributing factor.
Ocean ecosystems are particularly vulnerable to climate change impacts. Coral reefs, often called the "rainforests of the sea," are experiencing widespread bleaching events due to rising water temperatures. These vibrant ecosystems support approximately 25% of all marine species despite covering less than 1% of the ocean floor. The loss of coral reefs would have cascading effects throughout marine food webs and impact millions of people who depend on reef ecosystems for food and livelihood.
Furthermore, climate change is disrupting the delicate timing of natural events, a phenomenon known as phenological mismatch. For example, plants may bloom earlier in response to warmer springs, but the insects that pollinate them or the birds that feed on those insects may not adjust their life cycles accordingly.
